President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Senate's approval for a N1.7 trillion Federal Capital Territory Administration budget for the 2025 fiscal year.
The request was conveyed in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, which was read during Wednesday's plenary session.
In the letter, President Tinubu cited Section 299 of the Nigerian Constitution, which grants the National Assembly legislative authority over the Federal Capital Territory.
"The 2025 FCT Budget Proposal prioritises investment in health care services, job creation, youth empowerment, social welfare services, education infrastructure as well as increasing productivity in agriculture," the President stated in his letter.
Tinubu emphasized that the budget aims to lift as many citizens as possible out of poverty. According to the proposal, 85 percent of the capital expenditure has been allocated for completing ongoing projects, while the remaining 15 percent is designated for new capital initiatives.
"This is to sustain the ongoing efforts at providing basic infrastructure and social amenities in the FCT," the President explained.
The President expressed optimism that the Senate would give the budget proposal expeditious consideration and approval to facilitate continued development in the Federal Capital Territory.
This budget presentation comes as part of the administration's broader economic agenda, which has seen increased focus on infrastructure development and social welfare programs across the country.
