The Executive Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area in Benue State, Prince Maxwell Ogiri, has ordered the immediate suspension of all wheelbarrow pusher operations within the Otukpo Main Market following a deadly incident last week.
The directive, issued on Monday, comes after a man was reportedly killed during a confrontation linked to some wheelbarrow pushers, an incident that has created tension in the market and surrounding areas of Otukpo town.
According to the chairman, the suspension will remain in effect until authorities complete a comprehensive profiling of all individuals working as wheelbarrow pushers in the market.
"Only those verified and granted operational permits by both the Otukpo Local Government Council and the Nigeria Police Force will be allowed to return to business," Ogiri stated in his official announcement.
The chairman emphasized his administration's commitment to maintaining peace, order, and security across the local government area. He further warned that anyone who defies this directive would face serious legal consequences.
This development highlights growing concerns about security and proper identification of informal workers in public spaces, particularly in market environments where large numbers of people gather daily for commercial activities.
Local authorities have not yet announced a timeline for when the verification process will be completed or when compliant wheelbarrow pushers might be allowed to resume their operations.
