The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has refuted claims of a recent deadly ambush by Boko Haram terrorists in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State, describing a viral video purportedly showing the attack as misleading and false.

In an official statement released on Friday, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, clarified that the video currently circulating on social media platforms is an old clip from 2020 and not connected to any recent security incident.

"The attention of the Defence Headquarters has been drawn to a viral video showing troops being ambushed by terrorists, allegedly in Marte, Borno State," the statement read. "We wish to categorically state that the video is not linked to any recent operation and is clearly aimed at spreading misinformation."

According to Major General Buba, the video was originally published in March 2020 by a foreign news outlet following an ambush on troops at that time. He explained that the footage is being recycled and falsely presented as a new attack by individuals with intentions to promote terrorist propaganda and undermine troop morale.

"The video is being recycled by individuals sympathetic to terrorists' objectives to discredit the armed forces and spread fear," he stated. "We strongly advise the public and media to verify sources before spreading such content."

The DHQ acknowledged that while terrorists recently attempted an attack in Marte, the operation was swiftly repelled by troops of Operation Hadin Kai. Buba emphasized that no ambush similar to what was depicted in the old video occurred during the recent encounter.

"Our troops in the North East remain vigilant and committed to defeating terrorism," he assured. "We urge Nigerians to remain calm and support the military's ongoing efforts to restore peace and security."

The Defence Headquarters also issued a stern warning to those spreading false information, stating that security agencies are monitoring individuals involved in circulating fake content intended to mislead the public and cause unnecessary panic.

This clarification comes amid ongoing counter-terrorism operations in Nigeria's northeastern region, where security forces continue to combat insurgent groups.
