The Kebbi State Government has officially declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) politically irrelevant in the state following the defection of three serving senators to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Yakubu Ahmed, announced that the mass defection of Senators Adamu Aliero, Garba Maidoki, and Yahaya Abdullahi represents the final collapse of the opposition party in Kebbi State.
"The party has been on life support for months. The exit of Senators Adamu Aliero, Garba Maidoki, and Yahaya Abdullahi is the final nail in the coffin. These were the party's strongest pillars. With their defection, the PDP has nothing left to stand on in Kebbi State," the statement read in part.
According to the government, the defections are attributed to Governor Nasir Idris's performance and leadership style since taking office in 2023. The statement suggests that the governor's achievements have attracted opposition figures to the ruling party.
Reports indicate that the recent wave of defections has triggered internal panic among remaining PDP stakeholders in Kebbi, with some now publicly admitting that the party's structure has collapsed beyond repair.
The defection of Senator Adamu Aliero, a former governor and influential political figure in the state, is particularly significant as he was considered one of the strongest pillars of the opposition party in Kebbi.
This development comes amid reports of similar defections in other states, highlighting the ongoing realignment of political forces ahead of future electoral contests in Nigeria.
