The Kebbi State Government has initiated an emergency drain evacuation and clearing exercise across the state as part of proactive measures to mitigate potential flooding during the rainy season. Authorities have simultaneously issued urgent relocation warnings to residents living in lowland and flood-prone areas.

Commissioner for Urban Development, Hayatuddeen Ahmad Bawa, confirmed on Friday in Birnin Kebbi that the operation aims to remove waste and debris from waterways to ensure unobstructed rainwater flow.

"We have already begun clearing drains to allow for the free flow of water. This is to prevent blockages that could lead to flooding," Bawa stated.

Response to Federal Warning

The initiative follows recent alerts from the federal government that identified over 1,200 communities nationwide at high risk of flooding, with several areas in Kebbi State included in the warning.

The commissioner emphasized the importance of community cooperation, urging residents to refrain from dumping refuse in drainage systems or constructing buildings along water channels, practices that significantly worsen flooding impacts.

"Government is doing everything possible to minimise the devastating effects of flooding, but residents must also act responsibly," he added.

Residents' Dilemma

Despite the warnings, some residents face difficult choices. Hajia Mariya Saidu, a resident of one vulnerable area, expressed her family's predicament: "We know the risk, but we can't afford safer places."

This highlights the socioeconomic challenges complicating flood response efforts, as many vulnerable households lack the financial resources to relocate to safer areas despite understanding the dangers.

The Kebbi State Government continues to emphasize that early preventive action and community cooperation are essential to minimize potential flood damage as the rainy season progresses.
