A farmer in Kebbi State has been commended for his heroic action after discovering and rescuing a newborn baby girl who had been buried alive on his farmland in Kamba, Dandi Local Government Area.

Kabiru Kamba, the farmer who made the shocking discovery last Friday, recounted the incident on Monday while receiving a delegation from the Kebbi State Gender-Based Violence Technical Working Group, led by former Permanent Secretary, Hajiya Rafa'atu Hammani.

Miraculous Discovery

According to Kamba, he noticed an unusual mound on his land that aroused his curiosity. "I was curious about the ridge, so I stopped some motorcyclists and asked them to help dig," he explained. "We uncovered a piece of cloth, and I immediately alerted nearby police officers. They arrived and dug further, only to find a baby girl, miraculously still alive and crying, wrapped in fabric and buried in the soil."

In a remarkable display of compassion, Kamba offered to care for the baby and has since taken responsibility for her well-being. The timing seemed providential as his wife had recently given birth, making it possible for her to breastfeed the rescued infant.

"It was purely a humanitarian decision. My wife had just given birth, so breastfeeding the child has not been a challenge," Kamba added, noting that a naming ceremony was scheduled for Wednesday, with preparations already underway.

Family's Commitment

Kamba's wife expressed joy at the unexpected addition to their family, affirming her commitment to raising the baby as her own. The couple's decision to embrace the abandoned child has earned them widespread admiration in the community.

During the visit, Hajiya Hammani praised the farmer for his swift action and assured that the team would brief the Wife of the Governor, Hajiya Zainab Nasare Idris, for further intervention.

The Secretary of the Technical Working Group, Alhaji Nasiru Idris, also commended the farmer's courage and offered prayers for the child's continued survival. He confirmed that police had launched an investigation to identify those responsible for the heinous act.

In support of the family's noble gesture, the delegation presented relief materials, including baby clothes, powdered milk, diapers, soap, a mattress, a mosquito net, and a baby bed.

The case has sparked outrage and concern among residents, with many calling for increased vigilance against child abandonment and infanticide in the region.
