Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have launched a deadly attack on a Nigerian Army base in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State, reportedly killing an unspecified number of soldiers and seizing military equipment.
According to security and local sources, the attack occurred around 3:00 am on Monday at the Forward Operation Base of the 153 Task Force Battalion. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and seeing Nigeria Air Force fighter jets hovering over the area following the attack.
Sources familiar with the incident revealed that troops were dislodged from their positions, with many soldiers reportedly captured during the assault. "ISWAP has taken over Marte, an unspecified number of soldiers were killed, some captured and many have deserted. They ran towards Dikwa, and are currently at the 24 Task force Brigade, Dikwa," a source disclosed.
The terrorists also reportedly destroyed armoured tanks and escaped with weapons and ammunition from the military base. Marte is located approximately 38 kilometers from Dikwa, the headquarters of Dikwa Local Government Area of Borno State.
This attack represents a significant escalation in terrorist activities in the region, which has suffered from insurgency for over a decade. Military authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
The Nigerian Senate had previously called for the redeployment of sufficient personnel to combat Boko Haram following earlier attacks that resulted in military casualties.
