Suspected bandits have abducted five traders following an attack on a market in Dogon Ruwa community, Bashar district of Wase Local Government Area, Plateau State.

The incident occurred around 11 am when the armed men arrived on motorcycles at the bustling market, which typically attracts hundreds of visitors from neighboring communities.

According to local sources, the bandits specifically targeted the market day, firing shots indiscriminately and causing traders and visitors to flee in panic. The attackers proceeded to loot shops and business centers, carting away substantial quantities of food items and medicines.

Shapi'i Sambo, a youth leader in Wase, described the attack to reporters: "They stormed the area, almost surrounding the community, and started shooting. Some of them went straight to the market where they picked five shop owners. We believe they targeted the market day to steal food items."

The market is known for selling essential commodities including flour, rice, beans, drinks, and other supplies, making it a critical resource for the local economy.

Security personnel, including soldiers and vigilantes, have reportedly been mobilized to track the bandits to their hideouts. However, Major Samson Zhakom, spokesperson for Operation Safe Haven, has yet to respond to inquiries about the incident.

This attack adds to growing security concerns in the region, with residents lamenting that bandit attacks have become increasingly frequent. Community members have issued urgent appeals to security forces for protection, describing the bandit incursions as "a daily occurrence."

The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in Plateau State and surrounding regions, where armed groups continue to target rural communities, disrupting economic activities and threatening civilian safety.
