Former Barcelona striker David Villa has backed teenage sensation Lamine Yamal to win the prestigious Ballon d'Or award, citing the 17-year-old's exceptional performances for the Catalan club this season.
Speaking at a public appearance, Villa expressed confidence in Yamal's chances, saying: "We will see, I think he has done well. There is still a few weeks left in the season and you know it is an award that I have never really believed in them. He will win it one day, for sure."
The young winger has established himself as one of the favorites for football's most coveted individual honor following his breakthrough season under manager Hansi Flick. Yamal has been instrumental in Barcelona's campaign, helping the team secure the Copa del Rey trophy already this term.
Villa, who enjoyed a successful spell at Barcelona between 2010 and 2013, winning numerous trophies including the Champions League, believes Yamal's trajectory points to inevitable Ballon d'Or success, whether it comes this year or in the future.
At just 17 years old, Yamal would make history if he were to win the award this year, potentially becoming the youngest-ever Ballon d'Or recipient, surpassing the record currently held by Ronaldo Nazário, who won it at 21 years old in 1997.
The Ballon d'Or ceremony, which recognizes the world's best footballer over the previous season, is expected to take place later this year, with several other candidates likely to challenge Yamal for the prestigious accolade.
