The Arewa Youth Assembly has come out strongly against recent calls for the suspension of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, describing the demands as politically motivated schemes orchestrated by opposition forces.
In a statement released in Abuja on Tuesday, the youth group dismissed allegations of corruption leveled against Akume as unfounded and deliberately crafted to tarnish the reputation of both the SGF and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration.
The Arewa Youth Assembly specifically targeted another organization, the Arewa United Patriots, labeling it as a "faceless" group that lacks any history of public engagement. According to their statement, this previously unknown group emerged solely to spread misinformation and make unsubstantiated claims against key government officials.
"The SGF, Senator George Akume, is not involved in any corruption, bribery or money laundering case. These allegations are meant to distract him from his duties and undermine the efforts of the Tinubu administration," the statement emphasized.
The youth group further argued that the timing and nature of the accusations point to a calculated campaign designed to damage Akume's reputation. They described the SGF as a pivotal figure in implementing the government's policies and programs.
In their appeal to President Tinubu, the Arewa Youth Assembly urged the president to disregard calls for Akume's suspension and called on security agencies to investigate the origins and motivations of the group behind these accusations.
The youth assembly warned that suspending government officials based on unverified claims from unknown groups would create a dangerous precedent that could potentially destabilize the administration.
This development comes amid increasing political tensions as various groups position themselves within Nigeria's complex political landscape, with government appointments and policies continuing to generate significant debate across the country.
