The Abia State Government has recognized two former members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for their outstanding contributions to tackling unemployment and preventing viral diseases in their host communities.
Governor Alex Otti presented certificates of recognition to Owums Francis Chimaobim, an Information Technologist, and Dr. Ngene Joseph Ekene, a Medical Doctor, for their exceptional service during their NYSC year in the state.
Chimaobim was honoured for training widows in business opportunities and funding entrepreneurship initiatives for youths in Umuawa Alaocha community. The state government noted that his job creation efforts helped discourage young people from engaging in criminal activities while lifting many out of poverty.
Dr. Ekene received recognition for organizing screenings for HIV, Syphilis, Tuberculosis, Hepatitis B and C in Uzuakoli. He was also commended for his efforts in ensuring the safe delivery of pregnant women in the community.
Mrs. Gladys Adama, the Abia State Coordinator of NYSC, presented the certificates and cash gifts from Governor Otti to the former corps members. She praised them for sacrificing their earnings and time to fight unemployment and prevent viral diseases in their service locations.
"I charge all NYSC members serving in Abia to contribute to the transformation of the communities they are posted to," Mrs. Adama said during the presentation ceremony.
In his response, Chimaobim challenged Nigerian youths to overcome poverty and economic hardship by acquiring skills. He advised young people to shun crime and embrace life-changing job opportunities to become wealth creators.
"The business of job creation cannot be left for the government alone," Chimaobim emphasized, highlighting the importance of individual initiative in addressing unemployment challenges.
This recognition comes as part of the Abia State Government's efforts to encourage community service and youth participation in addressing social and economic challenges facing local communities.
