Indigenes of Ngodo Isuochi in Umunnochi Local Government Area of Abia State have raised alarm over what they described as a targeted assassination attempt on their son, Chaka Ikenna Chukwumerije, the Abia State Commissioner for Lands and Housing.
The commissioner narrowly escaped death on Saturday, June 7, 2025, when unidentified gunmen attacked his official vehicle, riddling it with bullets along the Okigwe area of the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway while he was returning from his community to Umuahia.
Community Points to Political Motives
In a press statement signed by Ekeledirichukwu Marvelous Agha, President of the Ngodo Town Development Union Youth Wing (NTDUYW), and Secretary Obioma Anyikwa, the community alleged that the attack was politically motivated.
"From the nature of the attack, the ambush on his vehicle, and the relentless pursuit of him by the criminals after he narrowly escaped from the scene, it is deducible that what happened on that day was not just a random criminal act but a well-conceived targeted attack on the Hon. Chukwumerije," the statement read.
The community expressed gratitude to Governor Alex Otti for his ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity and restore peace in Umunnochi, while praising his achievements in office over the past two years.
Call for Investigation
The NTDUYW has appealed to Governor Otti to direct relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation to expose the masterminds behind the assassination plot and bring them to justice.
This incident comes amid growing concerns about political violence in the region, with the community pledging continued support for the governor's security initiatives in Abia State.
