Four persons have been confirmed dead following a fatal accident that occurred at Amorji community, Isiala Ngwa North LGA of Abia State along the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway on Saturday.
The accident, which involved a truck conveying goods to Umuahia, happened at approximately 5:00 am, leaving eight passengers with serious injuries.
According to local reports, the accident may have been caused by brake failure. However, some villagers suggested that poor visibility could have been a contributing factor.
Emergency Response and Casualties
Personnel from the Abia State Emergency Medical Service (EMS) promptly responded to the scene after being alerted by community members. The victims were evacuated to a nearby hospital via ambulance.
Confirming the incident on Sunday, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Abia State Command, Ngozi Ezeoma, stated that the accident involved eleven male passengers and one female.
"All four deceased victims were male, while the eight injured passengers—seven males and one female—are currently receiving treatment in the hospital," Ezeoma explained.
This tragic incident adds to the growing concern about road safety along major Nigerian highways, particularly the busy Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway which serves as a vital transportation route in the southeastern region.
Road safety experts continue to advocate for improved highway maintenance, stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, and better driver education to reduce the frequency of such accidents.
