Senator Tony Nwoye, representing Anambra North Senatorial Zone, has appointed Mrs. Justina Azuka as his Senior Special Adviser on Special Duties, less than 24 hours after she lost her bid to replace her slain husband in the Anambra State House of Assembly.

Mrs. Azuka, who contested under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform for the Onitsha North 1 State Constituency by-election, came second to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate, Mimih Ifeoma Azikiwe, who was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday.

The appointment appears to be a compassionate gesture following the tragic circumstances surrounding the Azuka family. Mrs. Azuka's husband, Justice Azuka, previously held the Onitsha North 1 seat before he was kidnapped and subsequently killed, leaving behind his wife and three children.

Sources close to the situation revealed that the initial decision to field Mrs. Azuka as the ADC candidate was aimed at empowering her to support her three children following her husband's death. With her electoral defeat, Senator Nwoye's swift appointment offers an alternative means of financial support.

When contacted by BenriNews, Senator Nwoye confirmed the appointment. Reports indicate that the position comes with a basic salary of N200,000, which many believe will help cushion the effect of her husband's loss and provide for her family's needs.

Mr. Peter Mmeagana, an indigene of Anambra State who commented on the development, praised Senator Nwoye for his empathy, stating: "What Tony Nwoye has done is the empathy which many politicians in Nigeria lack. The idea of fielding her to replace her husband was the best, but you see how vehemently opposition came after the poor widow. At least with what she has now, she can keep her family."

A photograph circulating online shows Senator Nwoye personally handing the appointment letter to Mrs. Azuka, in what observers describe as a gesture of solidarity with the bereaved family.

This appointment highlights a rare display of political compassion in Nigeria's often competitive political landscape, where the welfare of affected families is sometimes overlooked following tragic incidents.
