The Anambra State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formally appealed to Peter Obi, the Labour Party's presidential candidate in the 2023 election, to return to his former political home ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The appeal came during an enlarged meeting of the State Executive Committee (SEC) held in Awka on Thursday, where party officials reviewed the state of the party and deliberated on strategies moving forward.
Concerns Over Political Alliances
In a communique signed by State Chairman Chidi Chidebe, the party expressed concerns that "alliances with ideologically incompatible political formations in the guise of coalitions would likely not yield the desired success."
"The committee extends an open invitation to all aggrieved and former members of the PDP in Anambra, particularly our revered former governor, Mr. Peter Obi, to return home and reunite with the now rejuvenated and restructured PDP," Chidebe stated.
"We will gladly welcome our brothers and sisters back to join us in the collective quest for a better Nigeria," he added.
Obi's Political Journey
Peter Obi, who served as Anambra State Governor under the PDP platform from 2006 to 2014, defected to the Labour Party prior to the 2023 presidential election when he reportedly felt his presidential ambitions could not be realized within the PDP.
His campaign as the Labour Party candidate garnered significant support, particularly among young voters, challenging the traditional two-party dominance in Nigerian politics.
Other Party Developments
During the meeting, Chidebe also urged Anambra electorate to support Mr. Jude Ezenwafor and his running mate, Mr. Francis Okeke, in the upcoming election. He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a fair, transparent, and impartial electoral process.
The party also announced the unanimous nomination of Chief Clems Ezike to fill the vacant position of National Ex-Officio from Anambra and urged the Southeast Zonal Executive Committee under Chief Ali Odefa to recognize and forward the nomination to the national secretariat.
As of the time of reporting, Peter Obi has not publicly responded to the PDP's invitation to return to the party.
