Nigerian music executive and talent manager, Ubi Franklin, has revealed that he includes a 'no pregnancy' clause in contracts with his female signees, citing career disruption concerns.
Franklin, who owns Made Men Music Group (Triple MG) record label, made this disclosure during an appearance on the Culture Sonic podcast where he discussed the unique challenges of managing female artists in the Nigerian music industry.
"So just imagine that you're investing in a female artiste and she gets pregnant, that is over because it would take a lot for her to come back," Franklin explained. "Mention new female artistes that got pregnant and came back."
The music executive clarified that his stance isn't against female artists having children but rather about establishing career stability first. "I'm not saying they can't have children, but first build a strong career. If I am signing a female artiste, I always put it in the contract that they will not get pregnant for the duration of the contract," he stated.
Franklin's comments have sparked discussions about gender dynamics in the Nigerian entertainment industry, where female artists often face different career challenges compared to their male counterparts.
Triple MG has previously managed several successful Nigerian artists, including Tekno, who later moved on to establish his own record label.
This revelation comes amid ongoing conversations about work-life balance and gender equality in Nigeria's growing music industry, where female artists continue to navigate unique career paths while managing personal life decisions.
