Renowned Nigerian rapper Tobechukwu Ejiofor, popularly known as Illbliss, has revealed a discouraging encounter with a Lagos radio presenter during his early career days that highlighted ethnic prejudice in the Nigerian music industry.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Real Shareholders podcast, the "Aiye Po Gan" hitmaker recounted how the presenter predicted his failure in Lagos' music scene specifically because he rapped in Igbo language.
"When I came to Lagos, I made a record titled 'Igbo Boy.' Then, a radio presenter called me and said, 'What are you trying to do? You can't make it here. You've come here with an agenda. Omo-Igbo,'" Illbliss shared. The presenter then reportedly switched to speaking Yoruba, telling the rapper that while his music was good, it wouldn't gain traction.
Illbliss explained that the song wasn't offensive but simply celebrated Igbo culture and lifestyle. "It was about how Igbo people like to have a good time. Just looking at that guy, it made me feel terrible," he said.
Tribal Divisions in Nigerian Entertainment
The encounter left a lasting impression on the rapper, who reflected on deeper societal issues. "It made me feel that we can disguise all we want about being one nation, but the tribal divisions are incredible to handle," Illbliss remarked.
Despite the discouragement, Illbliss has gone on to build a successful career in the Nigerian music industry, becoming one of the most respected rappers in the country with hits that often incorporate his Igbo heritage.
This revelation comes amid ongoing conversations about cultural representation and ethnic inclusivity in Nigeria's entertainment landscape, where artists from various backgrounds continue to push for equal recognition and opportunities.
Illbliss has previously spoken out on other national issues, including a statement where he criticized the Nigerian government for "failing its young people woefully," highlighting his role not just as an entertainer but as a voice addressing broader societal concerns.
