Education Minister Tunji Alausa has revealed that President Bola Tinubu has issued a clear directive to ensure that public educational institutions in Nigeria no longer resort to strikes as a means of addressing grievances.

Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television's Politics Today, Alausa emphasized the administration's commitment to preventing industrial actions that have historically disrupted Nigeria's education sector.

"The President has directed that not again in this country will ASUU, or tertiary institution trade unions go on strike," the minister stated during the interview.

According to Alausa, the government has established regular dialogue with key educational unions including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU).

The minister highlighted that relationship building with these unions is crucial, noting that previous administrations had failed to honor agreements reached with educational bodies.

"It is just not promising, there has to be a lot of relationship building. Beyond that, the government is meeting its obligation with these unions," Alausa explained. "That is what has been lacking in the past governments. They sit with these unions, they are very good people. Over the years, government will just renege on those agreements."

During the same interview, the minister also addressed ongoing controversies regarding the age requirements for admission into secondary schools and universities, though specific details of this clarification were not elaborated.

The Tinubu administration's approach represents a potential turning point in government-education union relations, which have been characterized by frequent strikes that have significantly disrupted academic calendars in recent years.
