The Lagos State Government has directed 18 motorists recently apprehended for driving against traffic to undergo mandatory psychiatric evaluations as part of their prosecution process.
This directive, announced by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), forms part of a renewed enforcement strategy aimed at curbing dangerous road practices and instilling discipline among road users in Nigeria's commercial capital.
According to LASTMA officials, the affected drivers were arrested for what was described as "reckless and deliberate violations" of traffic laws, commonly known as one-way driving. Beyond facing legal prosecution, these offenders will now be subjected to mental health assessments to determine their psychological fitness for road use.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, explained the rationale behind this unprecedented move, stating that the government's decision aligns with international best practices in traffic management and safety psychology.
"The enforcement of psychiatric assessments is not intended to stigmatise or punish. Rather, it is a necessary intervention designed to protect the general motoring public from individuals who exhibit reckless disregard for human life and lawful order," Bakare-Oki said.
Despite numerous public awareness campaigns on safe driving practices, the agency noted that one-way driving remains prevalent in Lagos, often resulting in accidents, severe traffic congestion, and damage to public infrastructure.
Bakare-Oki emphasized that the new policy serves both corrective and preventive purposes, aimed at reforming driver behavior and deterring others from similar violations.
"This initiative goes beyond traffic enforcement. It reflects the state's vision to safeguard lives, promote responsible motoring, and maintain order on our roads," he added.
The introduction of psychiatric evaluations marks a significant shift in Lagos State's approach to traffic management, potentially setting a precedent for other states grappling with similar challenges. Traffic experts have noted that this approach addresses not just the symptoms but potentially the root causes of dangerous driving behaviors.
