The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) failed to conduct its primary election ahead of the forthcoming bye-election for the Ibadan North Federal Constituency seat in Oyo State.
According to official documents obtained by BenriNews on Wednesday in Ibadan, the electoral body stated that all efforts to monitor the APC primary, which was scheduled for last weekend, proved abortive.
The bye-election, slated for August 2025, became necessary following the death of the previous representative, Hon. Musliudeen Olaide Akinremi, who passed away last year at the age of 51 while serving his second term in office.
In a letter dated July 21, 2025, addressed to the Director of Election and Party Monitoring at INEC Headquarters in Abuja, the Acting Administrative Secretary in Oyo State, Rosemary Alaba Adeniyi, submitted a formal report detailing the commission's unsuccessful attempts to observe the primary election.
The report, signed by Kehinde Omisile, the Acting Head of Department for Election and Party Monitoring (EPM) in Oyo State, explicitly stated: "All efforts to monitor the APC Primary Election as specified in another letter signed by the State Secretary and submitted on Sunday, 20 July, 2025, proved abortive."
This development raises questions about the APC's readiness for the upcoming bye-election and could potentially impact the party's participation in the electoral process.
The Ibadan North Federal Constituency seat has remained vacant since the passing of Hon. Akinremi, and the bye-election represents an important opportunity for political parties to contest for representation in the federal legislature.
As of the time of this report, the APC in Oyo State has not issued an official response to INEC's declaration regarding the failed primary election.
