The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially declared Folajimi Oyekunle of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the Ibadan North Federal Constituency bye-election held on Saturday.

The announcement came in the early hours of Sunday at the Ikolaba High School Agodi Ibadan, which served as the collation center for the federal constituency.

Professor Abiodun Oluwadare of the University of Ibadan, who served as the Returning Officer, announced that Oyekunle secured a decisive victory with 18,404 votes, more than doubling the 8,312 votes obtained by his closest rival, Adewale Olatunji of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The bye-election was conducted across all twelve electoral wards that constitute the Ibadan North Federal Constituency, with voting taking place throughout Saturday before the final tallying of results.

In a related development, it was reported that the APC candidate lost in his own polling unit to the PDP, further highlighting the comprehensive nature of the PDP's victory in this contest.

The election has been described as largely peaceful by observers, including some members of the House of Representatives and a former deputy governor who commended the conduct of the electoral process.

This victory adds to recent electoral successes for the PDP, including winning in a polling unit in Jigawa State that belongs to a current minister in President Tinubu's cabinet.
