Former Anambra governorship aspirant, Hon. Azuka Okwuosa, has emerged as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the upcoming Anambra South senatorial by-election scheduled for August 16, 2025.

Okwuosa, a seasoned politician with extensive experience as a local government chairman, commissioner, and Secretary-General of the South-East Development Initiative, secured the party's ticket after defeating Mr. Obinna Uzor in a keenly contested primary election.

The by-election is being conducted to fill the vacancy created by the passing of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who died in the United Kingdom approximately a year ago.

According to the chairman of the seven-member primary election committee from the APC National Secretariat, Chief Henry Ikoh, a total of 594 delegates from all seven local government areas within the senatorial zone participated in the electoral process.

The results revealed that Okwuosa garnered an impressive 470 votes, while his opponent, Uzor, secured 57 votes. The committee declared 22 votes invalid.

Announcing the outcome, Chief Ikoh stated: "By the authority given to me by the acting national vice chairman of APC, I confirm that election was held before INEC, security agent, media and delegates. The exercise was peaceful and I hereby declare that Azuka Okwuosa won the election and hereby returned."

In his acceptance speech, Okwuosa expressed mixed emotions about his victory, acknowledging the circumstances that necessitated the by-election. "He [Ifeanyi Ubah] was a great senator and within the period he was in the Senate, he did a lot and I see it as a challenge for me to take over from where he stopped," he remarked.

Background of the APC Candidate

Born on November 3, 1959, in Jos, Plateau State, to a devout Christian family from Anambra State, Azuka Okwuosa has had a diverse political journey. He previously contested for the governorship position under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) platform.

His political career includes a brief stint with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) between 1999 and 2003, before eventually joining the APC. Okwuosa cited the party's openness to his vision for Anambra State's development as his motivation for joining the APC.

His extensive public service record includes serving as the chairman of Nnewi North Local Government Council, Commissioner for Works and Transport in Anambra State, and as Secretary-General of the South-East Development Initiative from 2002 to 2010.

The August 16 by-election will determine who represents the Anambra South senatorial zone in the National Assembly, with Okwuosa now positioned as the APC's standard-bearer for the contest.
