Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has strongly criticized members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who are aligning themselves with the new opposition coalition that has adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political platform.
Speaking at the PDP Stakeholders Conference in Abuja on Wednesday, Mohammed, who chairs the PDP Governors' Forum, emphasized that no one can simultaneously be a member of both the PDP and the coalition.
"We cannot take indiscipline to a level where it becomes contagious. If you are in PDP, you are in PDP. You cannot be in the PDP and be in the coalition or another party," the governor stated firmly.
He further described the coalition as "an aberration" and used a stark analogy to drive home his point: "You cannot belong to two places. You cannot be a hermaphrodite; you cannot be a man and a woman at the same time."
The governor's comments come amid significant upheaval within the PDP, which has been battling internal crises for over two years. Most founding members of the party echoed Mohammed's sentiments, asserting that individuals cannot claim PDP membership while simultaneously advancing the interests of other political parties.
The turmoil within the PDP recently intensified when its 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, resigned from the party last week. The former Vice President cited "irreconcilable differences" and a deviation from the party's foundational principles as reasons for his departure.
Prior to Atiku's exit, former Senate President David Mark also resigned from the opposition party. Mark has since been announced as the interim chairman of the coalition-adopted party, ADC.
These high-profile departures highlight the deepening fractures within what was once Nigeria's ruling party, raising questions about its cohesion and viability as the 2027 elections approach.
Political analysts suggest that the formation of this new coalition around the ADC platform could significantly alter Nigeria's political landscape, potentially creating a formidable opposition force against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
