Following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari in London on Sunday, President Bola Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the remains back to Nigeria.
Buhari passed away at approximately 4:30 pm on Sunday after battling a prolonged illness. The former president, who served two terms from 2015 to 2023, was 81 years old.
President Tinubu officially announced the passing of his predecessor and has spoken with Mrs. Aisha Buhari, offering his deep condolences to the former First Lady.
As a mark of respect for the departed leader, President Tinubu has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff across the nation and declared seven days of national mourning.
The late Buhari's political career spanned decades, having also served as Nigeria's military Head of State between January 1984 and August 1985 before his later democratic election as president.
Reports indicate that the former president will be buried in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, on Monday according to Islamic rites.
The news of Buhari's death has prompted reactions from prominent Nigerians and international figures, including World Trade Organization Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who described the news as "unbelievable."
