Reports have emerged indicating that former President Goodluck Jonathan is now ready to contest the 2027 presidential election, following extensive consultations with northern political leaders.
According to sources close to the Bayelsa-born politician, Jonathan has allegedly agreed to run on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform, with plans already at an advanced stage.
A close ally of the former president revealed that Jonathan's decision to re-enter the presidential race stems from his desire to address Nigeria's rising poverty, hardship, and the general suffering that has reportedly gripped the citizenry since the All Progressives Congress (APC) took power in 2015.
"The former president is concerned about the current state of the nation and believes he can make a difference with one more term in office," the source stated.
The source further disclosed that Jonathan has already held behind-the-scenes meetings with top political figures, particularly in northern Nigeria, to seek their support for his presidential ambition. Most notably, he reportedly met with former Nigerian military president, General Ibrahim Babangida (retd.), last weekend at his Hilltop Mansion in Minna, Niger State, where he discussed his intention to run for a single term in 2027.
Confirming the party's interest in Jonathan's return, PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Ibrahim Abdullahi, stated: "Many Nigerians have come to realise the mistake they made in not re-electing Dr. Jonathan. They now acknowledge his achievements and are even apologising, pleading with him to return and rescue the country."
Political analysts suggest that Jonathan's potential candidacy could significantly alter the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections, especially given his unique position as a former president who has maintained a relatively positive public image since leaving office.
If Jonathan secures the PDP ticket and wins the 2027 election, he would be constitutionally limited to a single term, having previously served as president from 2010 to 2015.
