Former presidential candidate and ex-Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Chief Peter Ameh, has declared that Peter Obi has taken the lead in Nigeria's 2027 presidential race discussions, suggesting the North will be receptive to his candidacy.
Speaking on Channels Television's Politics Today on Thursday, Ameh emphasized that Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, has dominated public discourse and currently tops potential candidates for the next general election.
"I see them (North) listening. There is no party today that is discussing which candidate should run that Peter Obi is not topping the list even with surveys," Ameh stated.
He further asserted, "The clear point today and everybody knows is that when it comes to public discussion, Peter Obi has taken over and he is in charge of the dynamic leading to the 2027 election."
Ameh expressed concern about the continued regional divisions in Nigerian politics, highlighting Obi's performance in the last election. "It pains me today that we talk about North and South. In the last election, 44 percent was what Peter Obi got in the South and 15.2 percent in the North. If you show Kwankwaso's result today, he got around one million in the entire country," he noted.
The former IPAC chairman advocated for a shift in focus from regional considerations to character and competence. "It's not about the fact that somebody is from the Southeast or Northeast. We should be looking at compassion and character and be disciplined alone to manage our public resources because you can't have a situation where our public resources are misaligned, misallocated and they are not directed to priority areas that would have helped the masses to grow," he emphasized.
As the political landscape continues to evolve ahead of the 2027 elections, Obi's growing influence suggests he may be positioning himself as a formidable contender across Nigeria's diverse regions.
