The University of Ilorin chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced its decision not to join the nationwide strike action declared by the union's national body.

The national strike, which commenced on July 8, 2025, was called to protest the delayed payment of June salaries and outstanding earned allowances amounting to approximately N10 billion owed to university lecturers across the country.

In an exclusive interview with BenriNews on Tuesday, Dr. Alex Akanmu, chairman of the Unilorin ASUU chapter, explained that the institution opted out of the industrial action because its members had already received their June salaries on Monday.

"Our members received their salaries yesterday, so there is no reason for us to join the strike," Dr. Akanmu stated during a phone conversation. This development was further confirmed by another union member who spoke with BenriNews.

The nationwide strike action has been gaining momentum across other federal universities where staff are yet to receive their June salaries. The national ASUU leadership is demanding immediate payment of the outstanding salaries and settlement of earned allowances for lecturers in public universities throughout Nigeria.

This development comes amid growing concerns about the sustainability of academic calendars in Nigerian universities, which have faced numerous disruptions in recent years due to industrial actions.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that other institutions, including the University of Jos, have fully embraced the strike, with academic activities already suspended until the federal government addresses ASUU's demands.
