The immediate past National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Ralph Nwosu, has clarified that the newly formed opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections is not specifically targeting President Bola Tinubu but rather addressing the deteriorating governance under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Nwosu explained that the political realignment is focused on providing Nigerians with an alternative to the current administration, which he claims has led the country into a period of economic hardship and widespread despair.
"The coalition is not only targeted at Tinubu. Tinubu as a person, we don't have any problem with him, but with the administration of the country," Nwosu stated. "The way APC has gone so far, no Nigerian, not just the people in politics, no Nigerian is happy."
According to the former ADC chairman, the coalition has adopted the African Democratic Congress as its political platform to challenge what he described as a growing disconnect between citizens and those in power. He criticized the current administration for operating what he termed a "palliative economy," where government relief packages fail to address systemic poverty while political elites continue to live in opulence.
Nwosu also expressed concerns about the government's infrastructure priorities, specifically mentioning the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project, which has faced criticism regarding its cost and feasibility.
Emphasizing that the coalition was formed to reclaim the promise of democracy rather than advance personal ambitions, Nwosu suggested that respected political figures from Nigeria's past would have supported their cause if they were alive today.
"If Abiola was alive today, he would join the coalition. If Shehu Musa Yar'Adua was alive today, he would join the coalition," he asserted.
The formation of this opposition coalition marks a significant development in Nigeria's political landscape as parties begin positioning themselves for the 2027 general elections, with growing concerns about economic challenges and governance issues becoming central to political discourse.
