The Jigawa State Environmental Protection Agency (JISEPA) has confiscated expired, contaminated, and improperly stored goods valued at ₦14,447,650 following a comprehensive statewide sanitary cleanup operation.
JISEPA Managing Director, Sanitarian Adamu Sabo, revealed that the exercise was conducted across all 27 local government councils in the state, targeting markets, shops, stores, and various commercial establishments.
"The operation was legally guided by Section 5(1)(2) of the Jigawa State Environmental Protection Law 2009 (as amended), and Section 125(1) of the Jigawa State Public Health Security Law 2024," Sabo explained while addressing journalists.
Legal Process for Seized Items
According to the Managing Director, all confiscated items underwent proper legal procedures, including verification, documentation, and official approval before destruction, in compliance with applicable health regulations.
Sabo emphasized that the initiative was not punitive but preventive in nature. "This action is intended to safeguard the health and safety of our citizens and to maintain the environmental and sanitary standards of our state," he clarified.
Collaborative Approach to Public Health
The agency highlighted its ongoing collaboration with market unions, traders, and local leaders to ensure full compliance with hygiene and public health laws throughout Jigawa State.
Residents have been encouraged to report any unhygienic practices or unlawful sale of unsafe goods to help maintain public health standards across the state.
The clampdown represents a significant step in protecting consumers from potentially harmful products while enforcing environmental health regulations in commercial spaces throughout Jigawa.
