The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a warehouse in Kaduna being used to store and distribute expired non-alcoholic beverages valued at over N35 million.
Andrew Tamanuwa, Deputy Director of NAFDAC's Investigation and Enforcement Directorate in Kaduna, revealed that the discovery came following a tip-off from a concerned citizen.
Interception of Expired Products
Acting on the information received, NAFDAC operatives intercepted two buses and a Volkswagen Golf loaded with expired beverages. The vehicles were heading to Kwanar Dangora in Kiru Local Government Area of Kano State.
Among the seized items were 700 packs of Schweppes and 300 packs of Fanta Orange that had expired since November 2024. All confiscated products have been transferred to NAFDAC's warehouse for proper disposal in accordance with public safety regulations.
Arrest and Ongoing Investigation
Tamanuwa confirmed that the owner of the expired beverages has been arrested and is currently in custody. Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals potentially involved in the illegal operation.
This discovery highlights NAFDAC's continued efforts to protect Nigerian consumers from potentially harmful expired food and beverage products. The agency encourages citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities related to expired or counterfeit products.
