Former Rivers State Governor and Transportation Minister, Chibuike Amaechi, has officially confirmed his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nigeria's ruling party.

Amaechi made this revelation during an interview with Channels Television on Thursday, stating that he had formally submitted his resignation letter earlier in the week.

"Yes I did," Amaechi responded when asked if he had officially resigned from the APC. He further clarified that he submitted his resignation on Tuesday, saying, "I directed one of my staff from my village to convey the letter to the ward Chairman that I've left the party. That's if there was any party called APC, by the way."

Coalition Formation Against Tinubu

Amaechi's exit comes as he joins a growing coalition of political heavyweights aiming to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections. The coalition's leadership meeting was held at the Yar'Adua Centre on Tuesday, where Amaechi had initially hinted at his departure from the ruling party.

The former governor now stands alongside other prominent political figures who have recently left either the APC or the People's Democratic Party (PDP), including Atiku Abubakar, David Mark, Sule Lamido, and Nasir El-Rufai.

As reported by BenriNews, the PDP faction led by Atiku Abubakar has encouraged "all well-meaning members of the party and other patriotic Nigerians" to join this emerging coalition.

Political Realignment Ahead of 2027

Amaechi's departure signals a significant political realignment as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections. His exit from the APC, a party he helped form and where he served as a minister, underscores growing dissatisfaction within certain political circles regarding the current administration.

The former minister has recently been critical of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accusing it of "doing everything to stop opposition against APC." He has also expressed concerns about the current economic situation under President Tinubu's administration.

This development represents one of the most significant political shifts in Nigeria's landscape since the 2023 elections and could reshape the country's political dynamics heading into the next electoral cycle.
