Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has declared that former President Muhammadu Buhari's administration performed better than the current government led by President Bola Tinubu, despite not achieving all its planned objectives.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television's 'Politics Today' program on Thursday, Amaechi stated, "Not everything was achieved. Buhari will tell you that he did not achieve all that he planned for. But then, he was better than the current government by all standards."
Areas of Superior Performance
The former Rivers State Governor highlighted specific areas where he believes the Buhari administration outperformed the current government, particularly in security and institutional independence.
"In terms of security, Buhari focused on it. In transportation, I'm open to a new challenge. Again, the independence of INEC was higher in Buhari's government than now," Amaechi remarked.
He further criticized the current administration's influence over the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), claiming, "Now, they can't even register a party because government officials are telling them not to. Those who applied to INEC for registration — their rents have expired."
Not Personal Criticism
Amaechi emphasized that his criticism of President Tinubu was not personal, noting that he would have been the first to praise the President if the administration was performing well.
This statement comes amid growing public discourse about the economic challenges facing Nigeria under the current administration, with Amaechi being one of several political figures to publicly compare the performance of the two most recent governments.
