Former Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Garba Shehu, has categorically dismissed rumors suggesting that his principal intends to work against President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 elections.
The clarification comes amid growing speculation following a recent high-profile meeting between Buhari and several opposition figures, including former PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal at Buhari's residence in Kaduna State.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News, Shehu emphatically stated that Buhari remains committed to the All Progressives Congress (APC). "No, not at all. President Buhari's position was and still is that he's an APC person. APC did him the big favour of his life. Made him president for two terms," Shehu explained.
"He is not going to betray that party. President Tinubu is a successor from the same political party," he added, highlighting the political alliance that brought both leaders to power.
Shehu further emphasized the historical relationship between Buhari and Tinubu, noting, "President Buhari ran for office three times and didn't win until they came together with Tinubu and all the others and they won."
The meeting that sparked the rumors had been downplayed by El-Rufai, who insisted to the press that their visit to the former President was not politically motivated. Despite this explanation, some APC members continue to link the gathering to potential political realignments ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
This development comes at a time when political discussions about potential coalitions for the next general elections are gaining momentum across Nigeria's political landscape.
