Suspected Fulani herdsmen have killed four Tiv farmers and injured several others in a series of coordinated attacks on Tiv-dominated communities across three local government areas in Nasarawa State.
The Youth Wing of Mdzou U Tiv, the socio-cultural association representing the Tiv people in the state, disclosed these incidents during a press conference held on Monday in Lafia.
Details of the Attacks
Philip Non'gu, Chairman of the group, described the attacks as "a direct assault on peace and unity in the state." According to him, the incidents occurred in Dooga Ayande of Doka Ward, Antsa in Kwara Chiefdom, Tse Yange in Tudun Adabu, and Tse Akira in Galadima.
The victims have been identified as Terra Twanbee, Sham Kyodo, Zaki Kwaghtager Ordu, and Teryem Aondo. Many others sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the Federal University Teaching Hospital in Lafia and other medical facilities.
Beyond the loss of lives, the attackers also destroyed farmlands, uprooted seedlings, and set six Bajaj motorcycles ablaze, while looting others. Farmlands growing rice, cassava, watermelon, sesame, and groundnuts, valued in millions of naira, were destroyed.
Displacement and Humanitarian Concerns
The violence has reportedly displaced over 10,000 residents, who are now seeking refuge in Kpata, Agyaragu, Kadarko, and Idadu. Non'gu expressed disappointment that, despite Governor Abdullahi Sule's ongoing peace initiatives, the attacks persist.
The group has called on the Federal Government to step in and ensure the protection of Tiv communities in the state. They also appealed to the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and NGOs to provide relief materials to the internally displaced persons now scattered across temporary camps.
This incident adds to the growing concerns about farmer-herder conflicts in Nigeria's Middle Belt region, which have claimed thousands of lives and displaced many communities in recent years.
