The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially reinstated Samuel Anyanwu to his position as National Secretary, following weeks of internal party deliberations.

Ambassador Iliya Damagum, the Acting National Chairman of the party, made the announcement during a press briefing on Wednesday. The reinstatement brings Anyanwu, a known ally of Rivers State former governor Nyesom Wike, back into the party's National Working Committee (NWC).

"Anyanwu is resuming as the National Secretary, that is why I said it was a critical decision," Damagum stated during the briefing, which was attended by prominent party figures including Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and former Senate President Bukola Saraki.

Planned NEC Meeting Cancelled

In a related development, Damagum announced the cancellation of the previously planned National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting. Instead, the party will hold an expanded caucus meeting.

"We will have an expanded Caucus, at the next Caucus we will take a decision leading to a proper NEC," he explained, adding that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had indicated they did not receive the party's notice for the NEC meeting.

The decision to reinstate Anyanwu comes at a critical time for the PDP as it navigates internal challenges and prepares for upcoming electoral contests. According to Damagum, the reinstatement decision, though challenging, was ultimately accepted by a majority of party members and endorsed by the party's organs.

This development may signal efforts to mend fences within the party, particularly with factions aligned with Wike, who has been at odds with certain elements of the PDP leadership since the 2023 general elections.

The expanded caucus meeting is scheduled for June 30th, where further decisions regarding the party's direction are expected to be made.
