The Social Democratic Party (SDP) National Working Committee has suspended its National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, and two other officials over allegations of gross financial misconduct, effective immediately.
According to a statement released on Tuesday by the party's spokesperson, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, the other suspended officials include Nze Nnadi Clarkson, National Auditor, and Uchechukwu Chukwuma, National Youth Leader.
Allegations of Financial Impropriety
The suspension follows a resolution made during a National Working Committee meeting where "overwhelming evidence" was presented linking the officials to unauthorized financial transactions, personal enrichment schemes, and improper movement of funds from the party's accounts.
"In exercise of its exclusive powers as guaranteed in Article 19.1, 19.3(i), and 19.5 of the Party Constitution (2022 as amended), the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has approved the immediate suspension of the National Chairman of the Party, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gbam, along with two members of the National Working Committee," the statement reads.
Escalating Party Crisis
The suspensions come amid an escalating crisis within the party. Earlier on Tuesday, BenriNews reported that protesters had pulled down the SDP's National Secretariat gate in Abuja, further highlighting the growing tensions within the party.
This development occurs as political parties begin positioning themselves for the upcoming 2027 general elections, with the SDP potentially playing a significant role in Nigeria's political landscape.
The party has not yet announced who will act as interim chairman following Gabam's suspension.
