Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has revealed that he declined an offer from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to serve as his spokesperson during his presidential campaign.
In a recent interview shared on X (formerly Twitter), Omokri explained his reasoning behind the decision, stating that he preferred to work with a sitting president rather than a presidential candidate.
"Atiku wanted me to be his spokesperson. I said no, I'm not going to be a spokesperson for a president and then be a spokesperson for a presidential candidate," Omokri stated during the interview.
Despite declining the role for himself, Omokri claimed he was instrumental in assembling Atiku's media team. "But, I hired his media team, I hired Segun Showunmi; I interviewed him and set his salary," he added.
Shifting Political Allegiances
Omokri, who previously served as an aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan, appears to have shifted his political allegiance toward the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. In recent months, he has been vocal in his criticism of opposition figures, particularly Peter Obi, the Labour Party's presidential candidate in the 2023 general election.
Sources indicate that Omokri is reportedly among individuals selected for screening by the Senate for ambassadorial appointments by President Tinubu, further suggesting his alignment with the current administration.
This revelation comes amid ongoing political realignments as various political figures position themselves ahead of future electoral contests.
