President Bola Tinubu has nominated 39-year-old Abdullahi Garba Ramat as the new Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

According to a statement released by the presidential spokesperson on Thursday, Ramat is an electrical engineer and administrator with a PhD in strategic management among other qualifications.

The President also nominated two individuals to serve as commissioners on the NERC board: Mr. Abubakar Yusuf as Commissioner for Consumer Affairs and Dr. Fouad Olayinka Animashun as Commissioner for Finance and Management Services.

While all nominations are subject to Senate confirmation, President Tinubu has directed Ramat to assume office in an acting capacity to prevent a leadership vacuum in the regulatory agency, pending his screening by the Senate as stipulated by law.

"President Tinubu urged the new appointees to use their knowledge and experience to discharge their functions and work assiduously to advance the administration's power sector vision," the statement reads.

BenriNews reports that Ramat replaces Sanusi Garba as Chairman of NERC.

The appointment comes at a critical time for Nigeria's power sector, which continues to face significant challenges in electricity generation, transmission, and distribution. The NERC plays a vital role in regulating the electricity industry, protecting consumer interests, and creating a competitive market environment.

At 39, Ramat becomes one of the youngest heads of a major regulatory body in Nigeria, potentially bringing fresh perspectives to the commission's leadership.
