Management and staff of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Secretariat staged a mass walkout on Monday, shutting their offices in protest against Senator Samuel Anyanwu's attempt to forcibly reclaim his position as national secretary.
The demonstration followed the party's National Working Committee's (NWC) appointment of Setonji Koshodeo as acting National Secretary, a decision that staff members had previously pledged to support.
According to eyewitnesses, Anyanwu arrived at the party headquarters accompanied by suspected thugs and attempted to take control of the national secretary's office. Staff members, refusing to recognize or work with him, quickly mobilized and vacated the premises, leaving him "stranded and visibly embarrassed."
"Anyanwu and his people entered the building. It wasn't just an attempt, they actually went straight into the national secretary's office with some of his aides," one protesting staff member told BenriNews.
Staff Insist on Koshoedo's Appointment
The PDP secretariat remained deserted throughout the protest, with staff members insisting they would not return until Anyanwu vacated the office. In May, the staff had publicly endorsed Koshoedo's appointment, maintaining that it followed the party's internal procedures.
"We had all left our offices and walked out in protest. That firm action led to his exit," another protesting staff member explained.
This incident highlights ongoing internal conflicts within Nigeria's main opposition party, which has faced leadership challenges since its defeat in the 2023 general elections.
At the time of reporting, the PDP had not issued an official statement on the matter. The standoff adds to the party's recent internal struggles, which have included disagreements over zoning arrangements and leadership positions.
Political analysts suggest this latest development could further complicate the party's efforts to present a united front ahead of upcoming electoral challenges.
