South-East leaders and state chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have officially recognized Samuel Anyanwu as the authentic National Secretary of the party, following a meeting held at the Abia State PDP secretariat in Umuahia on Friday.
The decision emerged from an expanded meeting that drew attendance from several national officials of the party, where leaders emphasized the importance of respecting the Supreme Court judgment that reportedly affirmed Anyanwu's position.
Respecting Court Judgment
PDP National Vice Chairman for the South-East, Chidiebere Goodluck, who addressed the gathering, urged all aggrieved members to return to the fold to strengthen the party ahead of future elections.
"PDP being a law-abiding institution, believes in the rule of law which entails that Anyanwu and other leaders of the PDP be supported to lead the party at the national and state levels," Goodluck stated.
The chairman of Imo State PDP, Austin Nwachukwu, also affirmed Anyanwu's position, commending members of the Abia State PDP led by former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, chairman Abraham Amah, and Senator Austin Akobundu for their efforts in maintaining unity within the party.
Legal Challenges Continue
During the meeting, Abia State PDP chairman Abraham Amah revealed that he had obtained the Certified True Copy of a court ruling that reportedly invalidated the elected executives of the PDP in the state. Amah indicated that this judgment would be challenged at the Appeal Court.
This development comes amid ongoing internal conflicts within Nigeria's main opposition party, with various factions claiming legitimacy in different leadership positions.
The endorsement of Anyanwu by South-East PDP leaders signals a potential consolidation of support within the region, though it remains to be seen how this will affect the broader national party dynamics as the 2027 general elections approach.
