Former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) can only survive if it strictly adheres to its constitution and the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.

Wike made this assertion on Monday during a meeting in Abuja with former Governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Samuel Ortom (Benue), and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), who were part of the controversial G5 Governors that opposed the party's presidential candidate in the 2023 elections.

G5 Governors Prevented National Crisis

During the meeting, which also had in attendance Senator Anyanwu, former Senate Minority Leader Philip Aduda, and various serving and former lawmakers, Wike boldly claimed that the actions of the G5 Governors had stabilized Nigeria's political landscape.

"Today, this country is stabilized because of the activities of the G5 Governors. You may like us, you may hate us. The truth of the matter is that if the G5 did not take the decision we took, this country would have been in crisis," Wike stated.

He emphasized that their decision to advocate for presidential zoning or rotation was necessary for the country's stability, regardless of who eventually benefited from their stance.

PDP's Current Predicament

The FCT Minister did not mince words when addressing the party's current challenges, suggesting that the PDP would not be in its present situation if it had heeded the advice of the G5 Governors.

"If the party had listened to what we said, we wouldn't have been where we are today, and we have continued to sound it to the party: let the constitution of the party and of the country be respected," he remarked.

Wike also raised concerns about what he perceived as double standards within the party, particularly questioning why only the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, was prevented from returning to his position after losing the Imo State governorship election.

The meeting brought together what Wike described as "stakeholders of the PDP" who are "committed to the survival of our party, not just on TV talking or in the newspapers talking, but you are committed to the party at the various levels."

This gathering comes amid ongoing internal conflicts within Nigeria's main opposition party, which has struggled to reposition itself following its defeat in the 2023 general elections.
