Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has publicly declared he has no intention to contest in the 2027 presidential election, stating his sole focus is on removing the Tinubu administration which he described as "evil" and "a tragedy" for Nigeria.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News, El-Rufai expressed regret for his role in bringing President Bola Tinubu to power and vowed to contribute towards removing what he termed an "evil that will destroy Nigeria if left unchecked."
Overwhelming Public Disapproval
"We have polled it. There is 91% disapproval of this administration across the country. 91% disapproval is the worst in Nigeria's history," El-Rufai stated. "Nigerians are looking for a credible option. I want to see people coming together, putting aside their differences and ambitions, and giving them an alternative to this failure of a government."
When questioned about his personal ambitions in relation to other prominent political figures like Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi, the 65-year-old former FCT Minister was emphatic: "I have no ambition. I just feel that having contributed to bringing about this tragedy to Nigeria by contributing to the emergence of Tinubu as president, I should contribute in my last lap... Let me contribute towards removing this evil that I believe will destroy Nigeria if left unchecked."
Coalition Building
El-Rufai indicated his willingness to support whatever political platform emerges from collective consensus to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). This statement comes amid reports of ongoing discussions between El-Rufai, Atiku, Obi, and other political heavyweights regarding the formation of a new political coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.
The former governor's comments reflect growing dissatisfaction with the current administration and suggest significant political realignments may be underway as Nigeria approaches another election cycle.
