Tension erupted at the Social Democratic Party (SDP) National Secretariat in Wuse 2, Abuja on Monday as protesters forcefully pulled down the main gate of the building while the party's National Working Committee was in session.

The dramatic incident, which has thrown the party into disarray, occurred as the SDP leadership was holding a crucial meeting inside the headquarters. Journalists present at the scene reportedly faced harassment from security operatives attached to the office.

El-Rufai Factor in SDP Crisis

Sources close to the party revealed to BenriNews that the unrest might be connected to alleged plans to impose former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, on the party's leadership structure. El-Rufai recently defected to the SDP from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The former Kaduna governor had earlier on Monday granted an interview with Arise Television where he vowed to frustrate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's re-election bid in 2027, further fueling speculations about his growing influence within the SDP.

This development comes at a critical time as political parties begin strategic positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections. The SDP, which has been gaining prominence as an alternative platform for politicians defecting from major parties, now faces internal challenges that could impact its preparations for the upcoming electoral cycle.

Party officials have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident or the specific grievances of the protesters. The situation remains fluid as stakeholders within the party attempt to address the brewing crisis.

Political analysts suggest that this internal conflict reflects the growing tensions within opposition parties as they position themselves as viable alternatives to the ruling APC in the next general elections.
