Afrobeats singer Oludipe Oluwasanmi David, popularly known as Spyro, has made a passionate appeal to Nigerian political leaders to address the economic challenges facing citizens during his performance at a high-profile political event in Akwa Ibom State.
Speaking at the grand reception organized to welcome Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Uyo on Saturday, the singer used his platform to highlight the growing economic hardship in the country.
"Shoutout to His Excellency the Governor. It's an honour to be here today. I heard about the good things you are doing in the state. And we are so proud," Spyro said during his performance.
The singer continued with a direct message to the political class: "I'm hoping that other leaders here can take leadership [lessons from him] and follow his footsteps and do better for us because things no easy for the country. So, make dem do better for us."
High-Profile Attendance at Governor Eno's Reception
The event drew significant political heavyweights from across Nigeria. Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima represented President Bola Tinubu at the ceremony. Other notable attendees included APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and numerous federal lawmakers.
At least 24 governors from the ruling party were present at the reception, including those from Cross River, Imo, Kwara, Kogi, Jigawa, Delta, Edo, Ebonyi, Lagos, Ogun, Sokoto, and Ondo states, underscoring the political significance of Governor Eno's defection to the APC.
Governor Eno's move to the ruling party comes amid growing political realignments ahead of future electoral contests, with the governor previously stating that he was "chasing elephant" and would not be distracted by "barking dogs" in reference to critics of his defection.
Spyro's comments reflect the growing concern among Nigerians about the economic situation in the country, with many citizens facing significant challenges due to rising inflation, fuel price increases, and general cost of living pressures.
The singer's appeal at such a high-profile political gathering highlights how public figures are increasingly using their platforms to voice the concerns of ordinary Nigerians directly to those in positions of power.
