The Benue State Police Command has issued a stern warning against lawlessness and mob action following recent tensions in the state. Commissioner of Police, CP Emenari Ifeanyi, emphasized the police force's commitment to restoring peace across Benue State while addressing the situation.
The warning comes after a security briefing with tactical commanders deployed to address the herders-farmers conflict in Yogbo, Guma Local Government Area, where cattle rustlers launched an attack on June 2, 2025.
Police Response to Recent Violence
According to a statement released by DSP Udeme Edet, spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, the CP has directed the Area Commander, Makurdi, and the Divisional Police Officer, Daudu, to work collaboratively with tactical commanders to ensure the safety of lives and property in the affected area while investigations continue.
"The CP has also warned against lawlessness, particularly mob actions against persons suspected for criminal activities in the state," the statement read.
CP Ifeanyi described mob justice as "cruel and uncivilized behaviour" that frustrates police efforts to maintain law and order. He cautioned that individuals participating in such acts would face legal consequences when apprehended.
Call for Community Cooperation
The Commissioner called on Benue residents to maintain law and order while continuing to collaborate with police to identify criminals causing unrest in the state.
This development comes amid ongoing tensions between herders and farmers in parts of Benue State, with security agencies working to prevent further escalation of conflicts.
The police command has reiterated its commitment to investigating the June 2 attack thoroughly and bringing perpetrators to justice through proper legal channels rather than vigilante actions.
