Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has suspended Mr. Mkor Aondona, his Special Adviser on Documentation, Research, and Planning, following the aide's arrest by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The suspension, which takes immediate effect, comes after Aondona was reportedly picked up over serious allegations of sextortion, cyberbullying, and blackmail.
Governor's Response to the Allegations
In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, Governor Alia ordered the indefinite suspension of the adviser pending the outcome of ongoing investigations.
The governor described the development as "deeply troubling" and emphasized that his administration would not shield any appointee found wanting in criminal or unethical conduct.
"This administration was elected to serve with integrity and discipline," the statement read. "Any official involved in acts capable of tarnishing the image of government or eroding public trust will be held accountable."
Commitment to Ethical Governance
Governor Alia reaffirmed his commitment to transparency and accountability in public office, stressing that all public servants must adhere to the highest ethical standards.
He also reiterated the government's resolve to protect the rights and dignity of all citizens, particularly women and vulnerable groups, and pledged continued cooperation with law enforcement agencies to ensure justice is served.
According to the statement, the suspended aide is expected to make himself fully available to the EFCC and face the legal process without interference from the state government.
This case highlights the increasing scrutiny on public officials and the growing intolerance for misconduct in Nigeria's political landscape, particularly regarding digital crimes targeting vulnerable individuals.
