The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Sa'adu Zungur University branch, has accused the university management of failing to honor a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed just six months ago that led to the suspension of an indefinite strike.
In a communique issued after its congress and signed by branch chairman Comrade Auwal Nuhu and assistant secretary Comrade Yahaya Yakubu, the union expressed disappointment over what it described as "calculated efforts" by the university administration to undermine the implementation of the agreement.
"The congress observed, with concern, the calculated efforts by the university administration to undermine the progress of the MoU within the agreed timeline," the statement read. "Half the duration of the agreement has passed, yet a significant portion of outstanding claims remain unpaid, despite increased funding to the university in recent months."
Allegations of Deliberate Delays
According to ASUU, the university management has been evasive, constantly shifting timelines and withholding critical information about computed arrears meant for verification. The union views these actions as deliberate tactics to delay full implementation of the agreement.
The union further alleged that the university administration has intentionally withheld members' salaries as part of its stalling strategy. Despite these challenges, ASUU has vowed to remain resolute in its demand for the full execution of the MoU.
BenriNews attempted to get a response from the university's spokesperson, Auwal Hassan, but received no reply at the time of filing this report.
This development comes amid growing concerns about the stability of academic activities in Nigerian universities, where staff unions and management often find themselves at loggerheads over welfare issues and working conditions.
The Sa'adu Zungur University situation highlights the ongoing challenges in Nigeria's higher education sector, where agreements between university administrations and staff unions frequently face implementation hurdles.
