The Executive Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has condemned a mob attack in Mangun District of Mangu Local Government Area that claimed the lives of at least eight travelers from Kaduna State on Friday.

The victims were part of a 31-member group from the Basawa community in Zaria, Kaduna State. They were travelling in an 18-seater Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria bus to Qua'an Pan Local Government Area for a wedding ceremony when they lost their way and were attacked by a mob after stopping to ask for directions.

Governor's Response to the Tragedy

Governor Mutfwang, who visited the scene of the incident and survivors receiving treatment at Mangu General Hospital, expressed deep sorrow over the attack. He described the mob action as "utterly condemnable and avoidable," stressing that the victims were innocent commuters caught in a volatile area battling sustained terrorist threats.

"Today is a tragic day for us in Plateau State. I never imagined such a senseless act of violence could occur within our borders," he said. "The same youths who have supported our security efforts must not become perpetrators of jungle justice. This is unacceptable, and we will not sweep it under the carpet."

The governor extended his condolences to the bereaved families, the government and people of Kaduna State, and the Zazzau Emirate. He also announced plans to dispatch a high-level delegation to Kaduna to commiserate with the victims' families.

Actions Taken

Governor Mutfwang directed that all injured victims receive full medical care at the government's expense. He also urged security agencies to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure that all those responsible face justice.

The incident highlights ongoing security challenges in parts of Plateau State, which has experienced intermittent violence in recent years. Local authorities have been working to maintain peace in the region, but this attack represents a significant setback to those efforts.

As investigations continue, there are concerns about the potential impact on inter-state relations, particularly between Plateau and Kaduna states. The governor's swift response and commitment to justice aim to prevent any escalation of tensions following this tragic incident.

BenriNews will continue to monitor developments in this case as authorities work to bring the perpetrators to justice.
