Popular on-air personality and rapper, Nnamdi Nwabasili, better known as N6, has claimed that Nigeria is currently at war, though many citizens remain unaware of the severity of the situation.
The media personality made these remarks while responding to the recent massacre in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, where over 200 people were reportedly killed, triggering nationwide outrage.
"Let me tell you something, whether you want to accept it or not. Nigeria is at war; Nigerians just don't know it yet," N6 stated in a video message shared on his TikTok page.
He further explained that many Nigerians have a misconception about what constitutes a war, expecting it to resemble scenes from movies. "Nigerians watch so many movies, so they assume a war is like a football match where the two opponents will face themselves and start fighting. But in reality, it is not always so," he said.
Rural Areas Bear the Brunt
According to N6, the conflict has been ongoing since 2016/2017, but remains largely unnoticed by those living in major urban centers.
"The problem is that most people reside in Lagos, Abuja, and state capitals, so the war hasn't reached them. But ask people in rural areas. Nigeria is at war. Nigeria has been at war since 2016/2017 officially," he emphasized.
The rapper criticized what he perceives as a disconnect between urban and rural experiences of insecurity, suggesting that many Nigerians are "just waiting to hear someone officially declare war before they know that they are at war."
BenriNews reports that the recent attack in Yelwata has intensified concerns about the deteriorating security situation in Benue State and other parts of the country.
The Chief of Defence Staff has reportedly claimed that the Yelwata massacre was aided by locals, alleging that residents provided food, shelter, and women to the attackers. However, security experts have characterized the incident as an act of terrorism rather than a farmers-herders clash.
As tensions continue to rise, Idoma Forum has demanded inclusion in the rehabilitation of Benue communities ravaged by herdsmen, while some critics have questioned Governor Alia's leadership in handling the crisis.
