The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has evacuated corps members from crisis-prone areas in Benue State to safer locations in the state capital, Makurdi, following escalating insecurity in Yelwata and Daudu communities.
The evacuation comes in response to bloody confrontations that have plagued these areas in recent days, raising concerns about the safety of serving corps members stationed there.
Collaborative Evacuation Efforts
NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs. Veronica Garba, confirmed that the evacuation was conducted in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force. The affected corps members have been relocated to secure locations, including family homes and corps members association offices in Makurdi.
"We understand the anxiety in times like this, but we want to reassure parents that their children are in safe hands," Mrs. Garba stated. "All those who were evacuated are safe, accounted for, and are receiving good care."
She also appealed for "continued prayers and spiritual support," noting that such support "makes a difference" during challenging times.
New Security Leadership
Mrs. Garba attributed the quick and effective response to the presence of new security chiefs in the state, describing it as "a welcome move towards the return to peace."
In her message to concerned parents and guardians, she emphasized, "We appreciate the worry during such times, but we want to assure parents that their children are well cared for."
Presidential Intervention
The evacuation follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's recent visit to Makurdi, where he directed security officials to restore order in the affected communities and hold those responsible for the violence accountable.
The NYSC has assured that it will continue to monitor the situation closely and prioritize the safety of all corps members serving in Benue State.
Recent reports indicate that violence in Benue has resulted in multiple casualties, including military personnel, with the death toll from a fresh attack rising to 24 according to local sources.
